Dental costs in the UK
"Cost" means two different things in UK dentistry, and they can differ by hundreds of pounds for the same treatment. The NHS charges a capped, banded fee regardless of how much work is involved; a private practice charges per item, uncapped, set by the practice itself. Both routes are held to the same regulatory standards -- the difference is price, choice and availability, not clinical quality. NHS charges: capped and banded
NHS dentistry in England uses three bands -- Band 1 (£27.40), Band 2 (£75.30) and Band 3 (£326.70) -- plus a flat urgent-care rate. You pay one band charge per course of treatment, however many visits or however much lab work it takes. Private prices: per item, uncapped
A private practice sets its own fee for every procedure, so the total for major work is not capped the way an NHS band is. That buys more choice of materials, more cosmetic options, longer appointments and often faster booking. Typical 2026 UK prices range from £30-£120 for a check-up up to £2,000-£2,800 for a single implant -- treatments the NHS rarely provides at all. Which one is cheaper for you?
For routine care -- check-ups, fillings, extractions -- the NHS is almost always far cheaper, since a Band 2 charge covers all of that for one flat fee. Private becomes worth considering when you want a specific cosmetic result, can't get an NHS appointment, or need work the NHS seldom offers, such as implants or certain cosmetic veneers.
